The Whispering Acorn
Equipment
500 gp 3 lbs Iron 0.45

The hags of the Iron Oak Coven began flooding this acorn with their magic shortly after they made their deal with the Queen Below. Made of solid iron, it was once an “ordinary” acorn—at least, as ordinary as it can be as the seed of an iron tree. However, as the hags filled it with their magic, the Queen Below slowly manipulated it until it became a conduit for her iron oak to take their souls and become a mighty servant. Whether by the Queen’s design or simply a byproduct, the magical energies they poured into the acorn caused it to gain its own power, and, in a single act of revenge for the hate-filled coven, it could lead to the fall of the Queen Below.

While attuned to the acorn, you feel its psychic energies seeping into your mind as though it’s whispering to you. It’s all a disjointed murmur with no real purpose, but it is always present and appears to be the randomly combined thoughts of creatures around you. As an ability, you can try to still your mind to search through the whispers and find the thoughts of a single creature or plant that you can see within 30 feet. To push further it is similar to Detect Thoughts.

  1. If the target is a creature, it must make a Willpower to resist the connection. On a failure, the acorn links your mind to the target’s, bringing its thoughts to you in a whispered tone.
  2. While in this state, you can listen to what it is thinking to cause the target to have disadvantage and you to have advantage on attack rolls.
  3. Alternatively, you can convince it to take a course of action you suggest if you succeed on a Influence vs Empathy.
  4. The creature may attempt a new Contesting Roll at the end of each of its turns to end this effect.

If the target is a plant, you can communicate with it as though you are under the effects of Speak with Plants.

Growing Affinity.

When you first attune to the acorn, your abilities to use it are limited, and you can only use the acorn’s ability to probe the mind of a creature or plant once per day

  1. Attune to the Acorn (Basic Affinity). You gain the powers of the Whispering Acorn and learn how to grow your affinity with it. You must reach each of the subsequent affinity levels in order (you cannot benefit from gaining master-level affinity before gaining the expert level).
  2. Remain Attuned for One Week (Intermediate Affinity). After you remain attuned to the Whispering Acorn for one week, you gain a +1 mod to Knowledge Roll and +1 to Psyche while you remain attuned to it.
  3. Probe the Thoughts of at Least 25 Unique Creatures or Plants (Expert Affinity). You can now communicate with objects as well. You can question objects about events in the spell’s area within the past day, gaining information about creatures that have passed, weather, and other circumstances. Objects in the same room as a puzzle or trap can recall details about the trap for up to a year, but they are never aware of the solution or countermeasure.
  4. Attune to a Second Charm of the Queen Below at the Same Time (Master Affinity). You can use the acorn’s ability to probe the minds of creatures and plants an unlimited number of times per day, and a creature type of your choice has disadvantage to resist your efforts to probe their mind. You must specify the type of creature upon gaining master affinity, and you cannot change it unless you become unattuned from the Whispering Acorn and begin the growing affinity process from the beginning. Furthermore, you can communicate with objects up to three times per day.
Set Bonus.

When the acorn is within 60 feet of the other seven Vex’Mortem Fey court magic items, you automatically gain expert affinity, even if you do not already meet the prerequisites. Additionally, the DC to resist the mental probe effect of the acorn increases to 17.

The iron shell gleams with a cold, metallic sheen, its acorn shape etched by veins of whispering frost that pulse like trapped veins. Faint murmurs emanate from within, disjointed echoes of nearby thoughts brushing against your skin like spider silk. Attuned, psychic tendrils seep into your mind, cold and insistent, unraveling secrets from creatures and plants in a haze of stolen whispers.
