Downtime Skill Advancement

During downtime on the campaign clock, a player character can invest gold and time to gain trained skill points (sp_t). There are two supported methods: training with a trainer or reading a skill book.

No skill may be advanced past skill tier 7 through these systems.

Training with a Trainer

  1. The PC and trainer must be in the same encounter and on campaign time. Only PCs may initiate training.
  2. The trainer must actually have the skill at a high enough tier (for another PC this is their total sp_t investment; for an NPC it is capped one point below their current tier threshold).
  3. Pay the full listed GP cost for the next sp_t upfront (coins + unequipped inventory valued at the trainer’s merchant sell percentage). Overpaying can improve the trainer’s favor (subject to the usual cap).
  4. Training lasts 1 day of campaign time and applies a Training status. You cannot train or read while already Training.
  5. At the end of the day, roll 1d20 + Mind against the tier difficulty for the sp_t you are trying to reach.
  6. Success = +1 sp_t. Failure = no progress (payment is not refunded).

Reading Skill Books

  1. Spend the required action points to begin Reading.
  2. The book must be valid for the skill (skill_trained) and you must meet all prerequisites, including the book’s tier band (checked at start and finish).
  3. Book tier N applies while your skill tier is 2N−1 or 2N (tier-1 books work for skill tiers 1–2, tier-2 books for 3–4, etc.).
  4. Each physical copy can be read only once per PC.
  5. When the book’s configured reading time completes, you automatically gain +1 sp_t (no roll required) if you still qualify.
