The Serpent’s Scale

As Mirenthos Marshfang aged, his power began to diminish. However, as a reward for his faithful service and wise counsel, the Queen Below enchanted one of the scales on his breast. This scale, about the size of a human hand, glows with a soft green light and stabilizes the ancient serpent’s power. If one were to remove the scale, its magical properties would shift slightly, instead imbuing the wielder with some of the Marshfang’s power.

While prominently wearing the scale (sewn onto clothing, for instance, but not stowed out of sight), you become immune to poison. Furthermore, you can cast Protection from Poison three times per day.

Growing Affinity.

When you attune to the scale for the first time, you have only Basic Affinity. When you reach certain milestones, your affinity with the scale grows, increasing its power (must be completed in order):

Attune to the Scale (Basic Affinity).

You gain the scale’s base powers and learn to grow your affinity with it. You must reach each subsequent affinity level in order (you cannot benefit from gaining master level affinity before gaining the expert level).

Remain Attuned for One Week (Intermediate Affinity).

Once you maintain continuous attunement with the scale for at least 1 week, you gain the Marshfang’s Watery Breath Weapon (30) (2d10) ability. Once per day, you can use an action to exhale a tidal wave in a 30-foot cone.

Remove Poison 10 Times (Expert Affinity).

If you use protection from poison to remove the poisoned condition from a creature ten times, you gain blindsight 10 ft.

Attune to a Second Charm of the Queen Below at the Same Time (Master Affinity).

You unlock more of the Marshfang’s power. You gain a bite attack that deals 1d8 + Strength modifier piercing damage, and you can use Watery Breath three times per day. Once per round, when you hit a creature with your bite attack, you regain hit points equal to the damage dealt.

Set Bonus.

When the scale is within 60 feet of the other seven Vex’Mortem Fey court magic items, you automatically gain expert affinity, even if you have not completed the tasks to reach it. Also, you gain the ability to breathe both air and water, and you gain a swim speed equal to your walking speed.

The Serpent’s Scale gleams with a soft green luminescence, its hand-sized expanse of iridescent keratin veined in emerald filigree, rough-edged and faintly warm to the touch. Sewn prominently onto leather or cloth, it pulses subtly against your skin, warding off venom's insidious creep through veins and flesh. As affinity deepens, shadowy serpentine patterns etch its surface, unlocking breaths of crashing water and fangs that rend with regenerative hunger.
